Your Muslim colleagues are not okay. They are in a state of deep trauma as they watch in horror and helplessness the war crimes committed against their kind. They see hospital and refuge camp bombings. They see children carrying injured children. They are watching entire generations being wiped out overnight. They are witnessing the genocide and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians right in front of their eyes. What makes the absolutely heartbreaking and traumatic scenes in Gaza even more gut wrenching is the complete impunity with which Israel is committing these war crimes. For those of you who know me know that I am deeply passionate and fully supportive of the Palestinian struggle for freedom. Freedom from 75 years of apartheid, freedom from living in an open air prison in the cruelest and most inhumane conditions imaginable, and freedom from the oppression that the Palestinians have been subject to for decades. For the 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide - one quarter of the world’s population - this is an extremely difficult and emotional time to see the deeply traumatic and tragic events unfold in Gaza, Palestine. I request you all to: 1. Pray for our Muslim brothers & sisters in Palestine, 2. Raise awareness and bring to light the plight of the Palestinians and speak up at every forum possible highlighting the genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians unfolding right before our eyes, and3. Can I donate zakah to another country, like Palestine (Gaza), even if there are needy people in my own country?Zakah is meant for specific groups as outlined by Allah, where He states:"Zakah is intended for the poor, the needy, those who administer it, to win over hearts inclined [to faith], to free captives, help those burdened with debt, support Allah's cause (such as those engaged in holy battles), and assist travelers in need; this is a mandate from Allah, and Allah is Omniscient, Wise" [al-Tawbah 9:60].This charitable act is designated primarily for Muslims, as evidenced by the instruction given by the Prophet (peace be upon him) to Mu’aadh ibn Jabal when dispatched to Yemen: "Inform them that Allah mandates a form of charity [zakah] to be collected from the wealthy among them and distributed to their impoverished." Priority should be given to the most devout and morally upright among the needy.The foundational rule regarding zakah is to distribute it among the needy in the vicinity of the wealth's origin, as derived from the aforementioned hadith. The word ‘sadaqah’ literally means ‘righteousness’. In Islam, it refers to a virtuous deed or an act of kindness done without the expectation of getting anything in return. This voluntary charitable act does not necessarily have to be monetary aid. It can also be as simple as greeting someone with a smile or lending someone a helping hand. Sadaqah is a sign of sincere faith in the angels of Allah counting good deeds for mercy on the Judgement day. Sadaqah can be given in many forms, the best charity for illness is making dua for the ill person. Another form of Sadaqah that can be given to cure illness is sacrificing animals and donating the meat in the poor and needy.
