In memory of those who "died suddenly" in the United States, October 24-October 31 (1)

Julie Powell, the food writer best known for her wildly popular memoir “Julie & Julia,” has died suddenly at the age of 49. The best-selling author passed away at her home in Olivebridge, New York, last Wednesday after going into cardiac arrest, according to the New York Times. She is survived by her husband, brother and parents. Powell became a literary sensation in 2005 following the release of “Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen” — a humorous account of her attempt to re-create every recipe from Julia Child’s classic cookbook “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.” The tome sold more than one million copies, and led to a 2009 film adaptation directed by Nora Ephron and starring Meryl Streep. Oscar nominee Amy Adams played Powell in the hit movie, which grossed almost $130 million at the box office. “She had so much talent and emotional intelligence,” Powell’s editor, Judy Clain, told the New York Times. The publication was the first to report the writer’s tragic death on Tuesday. The writer’s sudden death was met with shock on Twitter, where thousands of fans flocked to pay tribute.

In her last tweet, Powell (who was “vaccinated”) told her followers that she had Black Hairy Tongue:

November 2, 2022

Author Julie Powell, whose book Julie and Julia was turned into a hit 2009 movie starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, died of cardiac arrest on October 26 at the age of 49, according to a new report from the New York Times. But it’s Powell’s last tweet, sent the day before she died, that’s garnered a lot of attention on social media as fans try to make sense of the tragedy. “So I woke up with something that’s literally Black Hairy Tongue. People, including my doctor, seem to think it’s no big deal, and will go away soon, but it certainly is gross,” Powell tweeted on October 25. The Mayo Clinic’s website describes black hairy tongue as a “buildup of dead skin cells” that accumulate on the tongue, explaining that while it can look alarming, “typically it doesn’t cause any health problems, and it’s usually painless.”

Many Twitter users started discussing Powell’s last tweet, with some suggesting her untimely death, along with her diagnosis of black hairy tongue, could have been caused by a covid-19 infection. Others, more inclined to conspiracy theories about the covid-19 vaccine, tried to frame the death as a result of vaccination. Based on a search of her tweets, it appears Powell’s husband recently contracted covid-19 twice in the span of just one month and Powell herself tweeted about having the disease in mid-September. “Decided to take a nap and woke up sick like a dog. This is how the covid hits, I guess. All of a sudden like,” Powell tweeted on September 10. A few days later she shared another tweet about how painful it was living with covid-19. “Weirdly, my Covid is getting worse. Terrible headache, cough, probable fever, fatigue,” Powell tweeted on September 13.

Powell had previously tweeted that she was vaccinated and boosted, and by September 19 the author tweeted that she no longer had covid-19.

Many right-wing influencers like Tim Pool have seized on the premature deaths of people in the news to suggest that the covid-19 vaccine has caused the deaths, and Powell’s passing was no different. And while adverse reactions to the vaccine can occur, they’re believed to be extremely rare. There are also people who treat every early death in the news these days as something that was almost certainly caused by covid-19. While it’s possible Powell’s death had something to do with covid-19, we simply don’t have any evidence either way right now.

A simple fever caused by what looked like a normal cold turned into a nightmare that resulted in the death of a 7-year-old boy. The little boy died suddenly after contracting a virus that doctors say very commonly affects children, the Metapneumovirus. The very young victim is Andrew Velásquez, a native of Oakland, California, who died of the virus that usually causes respiratory infections but which, in his case, was complicated by his asthma. The child's father, Julián Velázquez, agreed to speak in an interview with Noticias Univisión 14 with the intention of warning other parents so that they can pay more attention to some symptoms that can be confused with a fever or a common cold. Julián relates that on Sunday, October 23, his son Andrew went with his mother to a Halloween party in the city of Alameda, but when he got home he started to have mild symptoms that looked like a cold. The parents treated him with the medicines they usually used in similar situations, and it seemed to have had an effect: the child continued to play as if nothing had happened and went to sleep at the usual time. During the night he woke up with a cough and sore throat and went back under the covers to rest. The next morning he went to school without any problems, but it was then that the teachers contacted Julian and his wife because Andrew already had a high fever.

Both of them decided to treat him at home for the whole of Monday, but since it was night and he still wasn't getting better, they decided to take him to the hospital for treatment, because his temperature did not drop and he had difficulty breathing. “At three in the morning my wife decided to take him to Highland Hospital (in Oakland), which is the closest, and from there they transferred him to the Children's Hospital,” said Mr. Velásquez. The next day, Andrew suffered two heart attacks and was taken to intensive care. The doctors explained to the parents that they should have drained the baby's blood to clean him of the virus he had contracted. At around 11pm on Tuesday, just 48 hours after developing cold-like symptoms, the treatment failed and Andrew died of Metapneumovirus.

According to a specialist, the virus Andrew has contracted can be complicated if the patient has heart or lung problems. In the case of the Oakland child, everything indicates that his asthma was a factor in his death. “It's a type of virus that causes colds, light coughs in many people, but pneumonia or any other complication can develop in some children. If someone has a previous problem, a lung problem, such as asthma, when you get sick with this virus, it becomes more complicated, "Dr. Erick Fernández y García, professor of pediatrics at the hospital, explained to Univision 14 News of the University of California at Davis. This virus can be anywhere, as doctors explained to Julián. That is why specialists recommend that parents take extreme precautions in children if they are patients with chronic lung and heart disease.

Lyerly, Ga. — Four people, including three high school football players, died early Sunday after a car rolled over in northwest Georgia. The Georgia State Patrol says the crash happened just after midnight on Georgia 114 near Lyerly. A UPS driver “died suddenly”:

October 27, 2022

Excelsior Springs, Mo. — An autopsy is now complete for an Amazon delivery driver who was found dead in an Excelsior Springs, Missouri yard Monday night. The death is suspected to be a dog attack that happened Monday evening, however, investigators say there is a real possibility that the driver experienced a medical emergency before getting mauled by the dogs. It happened at a fenced-in home off O Highway just outside of Excelsior Springs. Authorities still have not identified the person who died. That driver arrived at the home just after 5 p.m. Monday and authorities found him dead two hours later after a neighbor reported an Amazon truck sitting in the same place for a long time. Ray County Sheriff Scott Childers said the driver had trauma consistent with dog bites. The two dogs, a German shepherd and a mastiff, were shot and killed by deputies due to being aggressive to personnel on the scene. The dogs have been sent for necropsy testing, and all findings will take between eight to 16 weeks before an official cause of death is determined, according to Childers.
