How good is Ergo Sum

Ergo Sum’s strength lies in its uniqueness. As a Special Ammunition Sword sitting in the energy slot, it is already quite strong, as having a Heavy weapon-style Exotic as a Special Weapon is incredibly powerful.

In PvE, Ergo Sum’s main use is boosting other Swords. Ergo Sum takes inspiration from other Exotic weapons, such as the Gjallarhorn trait ‘Pack Hunter,’ and grants it to players wielding Swords, effectively increasing their damage substantially. Players can also go for an incredibly high damage roll of The Perfect Fifth, which deals incredibly high damage. There are some other rolls available, such as a combination with the Arc Conductor perk from Riskrunner on a Wave Frame Sword, but these are more niche.

In PvP, Ergo Sum is more of a ‘gimmick’ weapon as you are sacrificing a Shotgun or Sniper slot to run this Sword. However, if you have Special Ammo, you can look around corners as Swords put in a 3rd person camera. Despite this benefit, it’s probably better to just run a Shotgun or Sniper, but this Exotic definitely wins on the fun factor.

How to get the Ergo Sum Catalyst

The Catalyst for Ergo Sum is straightforward to obtain. You simply must clear the Excision quest in Grandmaster difficulty.

The Catalyst grants the following Exotic Trait:

  • Transcendent Steel: Dealing damage with a Transcendent grenade grants Ergo Sum ammo.

Once acquired, you’ll need several hundreds of weapon kills to unlock it. Using typical farming methods such as Shuro Chi or the opening section of Grasp of Avarice will speed things along.

Ergo Sum Perks and God Rolls

The Ergo Sum Exotic sword can roll with the following perks:

  • Frame: Vortex, Caster, Wave Sword, Lightweight, Aggressive.
  • Element: Arc, Solar, Void.
  • Exotic Trait: Wolfpack Rounds, Gathering Light, Sacred Flame, The Perfect Fifth, Arc Conductor, Stormbringer, Unplanned Reprieve, Insectoid Robot Grenades.

Teamplay/Damage PvE Roll

Jagged Edge is almost always perfect for Swords as it boosts our Sword damage, and Swordmaster’s Guard is best for Heavy Attack recharge rate. A Lightweight Frame is also good here, as it deals the highest base level of DPS.

Making sure we have a Void element to match with Falling Guillotine is important, and Wolfpack Rounds is a must so we can boost everyone’s Sword damage.

Solo/Ad Clear PvE Roll

Again, Jagged Edge is important for the damage bonus it provides, and Swordmaster’s Guard is the best pick for increased powered heavy attack uptime.

This roll is for if you actually want to deal damage with the Ergo Sum itself. While the Pack Hunter roll is great for supporting, Ergo Sum can deal outrageous damage thanks to the Transcendent Duelist perk. With the 51% damage bonus from this perk, alongside The Perfect Fifth, Ergo Sum can easily keep up with perfectly rolled Heavy Swords.

Ergo Sum PvP god rolls

PvP Roll: All-Around
BladeHungry Edge

Exotic TraitArc Conductor

Ergo Sum in PvP is rather niche, but it definitely has its moments where it can shine. Wave Sword Frame is a must here as it can almost guarantee two kills with one special ammo if you land the Wave. This allows you to then rapidly swing onto another nearby enemy, even if you have no ammo.

While this combo is deadly, it’s important to remember that you are very vulnerable while wielding a Sword, and players can keep their distance from you, so try to use cover and bait targets.

How to get Ergo Sum

Upon completing The Final Shape campaign, players will get access to the ‘Destined Heroes’ questline, which involves tackling several missions. Players must first complete three quests: the Queens Part 1, the Found in the Dark, and the Lost in the Light.

Upon completing all three quests, players can then access Queens Part 2, which will finally reward the Ergo Sum upon completion. After unlocking it, random rolls for the weapon can be farmed by completing the Pale Heart Pathfinder (limited to two times per week) and farming the Grandmaster Excision quest.
